Economic development is an important thing for a country like Timor-Leste, independent since only 2002. Economic development is vital to seeing improved livelihoods, more food for our children, better schools, increased employment opportunities, better health services, and much more.   So how to we measure progress in economic development?   The most common measure of economic activity is Gross Domestic Product (GDP).   GDP measures a country's wealth and the economy's performance. In simple terms, GDP is the $ value of all goods and services produced within a country. Using the most common measurement method, the components of GDP are given by the following equation: Y = C + I + G + NX Y is GDP, C stands for consumption , I stand for investment, G stands for Government spending and NX stands for net exports which is calculated as exports minus   imports . I recently obtained data on these components of GDP for the whole 20 years of Timor-Leste’s history, and

Source: Oxfam in Asia, June 2020 Youth economic development is critical for the world's youth population, including Timor-Leste. The economic sector remains a public concern for two decades after the country's independence. However, despite this, there is still a significant disparity in access to employment opportunities and youth economic development. The development of the youth economy in Timor-Leste is unclear, and a feasibility study has not been carried out on how to create employment for young people. Although the state has a broad vision to establish mega-projects with high-cost national budget expenditures to create jobs, this plan was not realistic in providing benefit to youth. The state budget allocation without any plans to create jobs based on the National Strategic Development Plan (NSDP) has actually led to job losses. The majority of Timorese youth do not have access to

Sending Timorese youth overseas: Finding employment or achieving development objectives?

Image
Historically, sending young Timorese overseas is not new for Timor Leste and the Timorese people. Even some of our founding fathers and the current leaders of this nation went overseas for study or for work during Portuguese and Indonesian times, traveling to Portugal, Mozambique, Indonesia, and Australia. This continues even until today. Since our independence in 2002 many Timorese have travelled overseas, some for studies under development partner and government scholarships, and some for work, posts in embassies and consuls in countries throughout the world. Many thousands have accessed Portuguese passports, to find shelter and employment in the United Kingdom and other European countries. Timorese moving to and working in another country is not a new thing.                  Source: Timor News, (6/12/2021) This short article aims to explore an important question: does Timorese youth going overseas simply achieve a short-term goal of finding, jobs or does it also help Timor Leste to
